Jean-Luc Van Den Heede (VDH) first on the 2018 Golden Globe Race
What is the Golden Globe Race?
At Les Sables d’Olonne in Vendée – France, on July 1, 2018, 18 skippers have set off on a solo tour around the world; the Golden Globe Race. A huge challenge since they sail under the same conditions as in 1968, year of departure of the first and only Golden Globe Challenge (series boats of the 1960s, no electronics on board except for the safety, requiring a navigation to the esteem and sextant, no autopilot, no weather, no router, no phone, no desalinator seawater, not even a digital camera, but only silver).
The extraordinary race of VDH
Last June, we spoke about the participation of Jean Luc Van Den Heede, Dean of the participants, a friend and supporter of Ptea Clara, an association supported by Phocea Mekong cruises, in this extraordinarily difficult single-handed, non-stop and unsupported race.
After 125 days (more than 4 months of racing), Jean Luc leads the race, despite the storms (hollows up to 10 meters in the Pacific), the damage (his main solar panel has failed since the start of the race ), the shipwrecks of competitors – more than 9 competitors out of the 18 at the start – show the bitterness of this immense sporting challenge. After a strong storm that raised a swell from 6 to 7 meters, JL VDH approach Cape Horn, still with great apparent relaxation, marks the very great sailors.
Follow the race of J.L. VDH
It is an extraordinary sporting feat that this great sailor is doing. Imagine that his first pursuer, the Dutch Mark Slats, is about 2000 miles behind him, about 20 days of racing, it’s absolutely amazing!
Jean-Luc even imagines arriving, hopefully, at Les Sables d’Olonne during the month of February. However, there is a very long road ahead, full of pitfalls and gust of wind.
Awards by Jean Luc Van Den Heede
Remember that this athlete is on his sixth solo tour of the world sailing. Since March 2004, VDH has held the “Global Challenge” despite many attempts since this record of the round the world solo backwards made against winds and currents. VDH was again successful in the offshore race finishing in the places of honor of the Vendée Globe in 1990 (3rd) and 1993 (2nd), Route du Rhum 1998 (2nd) and the Transat Jacques Vabre 1993 (4th ).
We wish JL VDH a fantastic adventure on the Golden Globe Race
We wish J.L. VDH as much pleasure to sail as we take to follow this wonderful adventure and invite those who wish to follow it on his facebook page: Jean Luc Van Den Heede and on his official website: www.vdh.fr.
